Groovy Music and Dance Outreach

The pop/rock/Classical fusion ensemble 1N2ATIV3 (“Intuitive”) and hip-hop dancer/choreographer Christian Townsend have had great succes this year with their collaborative “Get the Groove On” workshop, which they are currently running as a weekly summer program at Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center in Hough and a one-time workshop at Fleet Branch of Cleveland Public Library, Saturday July 23 at 4 p.m.

Their curriculum uses musical improvisation, interactive dance routines, and one-on-one teaching to engage students in grades 3-7. The interests of the kids guide each session, with activities ranging from using percussion and dance moves to internalize rhythms, to learning how to mix digital beats, to creating artwork in response to different moods of music.

Participants get the opportunity to connect with each other, the teaching artists, and the different musical instruments — flute, piccolo, cello, and percussion — and leave with a broadened appreciation for the diversity of expression possible in music and dance. By combining their Classical training and technical expertise with popular music styles and dance, the talented 1N2ATIV3 musicians engage youth with the arts in a unique way.
